40-Day Fast – Day 8 Devotional

Title:

It Is Written

Scripture Reading:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

— Matthew 4:1-4 (NKJV)

Devotional Thought:

On this 8th day of your fast, you might be feeling the pangs of physical hunger, fatigue, or even spiritual resistance. It’s important to remember: Jesus faced temptation at His weakest physical point.

After 40 days of fasting, the enemy didn’t simply test His body’s hunger—he tested His identity, His purpose, and His trust in the Father.

Satan tried to sow doubt: “If You are the Son of God…”

But Jesus didn’t entertain the enemy’s lies, nor did He debate feelings or circumstances. He anchored Himself in the unchanging Word of God. Three times in this wilderness battle, Jesus declared:

“It is written.”

  • When tempted to turn stones to bread (physical need), Jesus said: It is written.

  • When tempted to test God’s protection (emotional or spiritual pride), Jesus said: It is written.

  • When tempted to gain kingdoms without the cross (shortcut to purpose), Jesus said: It is written.

In times of temptation, the power to stand firm is found not in willpower alone, but in wielding the Word like a sword (Ephesians 6:17).

On your fast today, whether the temptation is food, doubt, fear, discouragement, or the enemy whispering that God has forgotten you—stand on the Word.

Declare over your life:

  • It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone.”

  • It is written, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17)

  • It is written, “He will keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him.” (Isaiah 26:3)

ree

Jesus shows us that even when our flesh is weak, our spirit can be strong—because the Word of God is alive and powerful.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What specific temptations have you faced so far during your fast?

  2. Which scriptures can you speak aloud to counter those temptations?

  3. How can you practically “hide God’s Word in your heart” to be ready when temptation comes?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how to stand firm in temptation. Help me to know Your Word deeply and to declare, “It is written,” when the enemy comes with lies. Strengthen my spirit even when my body feels weak. I choose to live by every word that comes from Your mouth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
