Scripture: “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” — 1 Kings 3:9
Devotional:
Discernment is a gift from God, a treasure that enables us to distinguish between truth and deception, wisdom and folly, righteousness and sin. King Solomon, known as the wisest man in history, began his reign with a pure heart before God. When given the chance to ask for anything, he didn’t request riches, power, or long life—he asked for wisdom and discernment. His prayer pleased God, and he was granted unparalleled wisdom to lead the nation of Israel.
Early in his reign, Solomon demonstrated discernment famously when two women came to him, both claiming to be the mother of the same baby. With divine wisdom, he proposed to cut the baby in two, knowing the true mother would rather give up her child than see him harmed (1 Kings 3:16-28). This was discernment in action—seeing beyond words to the heart of the matter.
Yet, later in his life, Solomon’s lack of discernment led to his downfall. Despite his wisdom, he ignored God’s warnings and allowed his many wives to turn his heart away from the Lord (1 Kings 11:4). He made alliances that compromised his devotion to God, proving that even the wisest among us can fall if we do not remain anchored in His truth.
This is a warning for us as women. We need discernment in every area of our lives—our relationships, our choices, and our spiritual walk. Sometimes, what looks good is not from God. Sometimes, voices around us speak lies disguised as truth. Without discernment, we risk being led away from the path God has set before us.
Reflection:
1. Are you seeking discernment in your daily decisions?
2. Have you ever ignored a prompting from the Holy Spirit and later realized it was a warning?
3. Are there areas in your life where you need to ask God for wisdom and clarity?
Prayer:
Father, just as Solomon asked for wisdom, I ask You today for discernment. Help me to see with spiritual eyes, to hear Your voice clearly, and to make choices that align with Your will. Guard my heart from deception and keep me rooted in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
